Men’s fashion week in Paris came to a close on Sunday, but is still on everyone’s lips, all due to one American designer, who let his models go commando for his show. Of course, nudity in fashion is not a new thing - runways are used to see naked bottoms and bare breasts every now and then, but male genitals have never been exposed before and that was the only left taboo, now broken by Rick Owens.
However, in all fairness, it was not nudity for the sake of nudity, as not everybody at the show actually saw the models’ private parts. They were not so easy to notice through small peepholes, cut out in what seemed to look like oversized potato sacks, but in fact, were the tunic-like garments rearranged so that a collar formed a hole near the crotch. In a short backstage interview to Style.com, the designer admitted he didn’t mean to make a loud statement, but rather play a little joke. “It’s a little bit of juvenile transgression. Boys with their dicks out is such a simple, primal, childish gesture. Let’s not forget a bit of cheerful depravity.”
And cheerful it was. As the audience gradually realized what was going on in front of them, whispers and giggles were all over the place. Hashtag #dickowens started trending and the phenomenon immediately won the designer numerous headlines in the media.
Whether he went too far or not with his little joke, Owens did make history once again. Last year in Paris he also shocked the audience, when instead of models, the California-born cast dancers from African-American sororities, all ethnically diverse and with shapely curves. Head-to-toe dressed in Owens, they stomped and screamed on the stage, as performing some sort of tribal dance with elements of step and military drill.
But last week fashion community witnessed a different type of dance. Unlike previous collections, the FW2015-16 show included items, anyone can hardly wear outside the house. Display of dicks sparked stir and raised a number of eyebrows even among worldly-wise fashion editors. This time Owens had to explain himself. “It’s very powerful,” he said after the show. “Not many people can do that. I mean, it’s a straight world now. And it also, I think, says something about being independent. Who else can really get away with that kind of stuff? It’s a corporate world.”
Owens refers to the fact, that he is an independent designer and his label doesn’t belong to a big company. He, indeed, has more freedom than others. While big maisons have to listen to many voices and satisfy many needs, he on the other hand doesn’t have to compromise at all and can do whatever he pleases. And that is exactly what he did last Thursday. After all, his esthetic is so specific and narrow, his clothes are simply not for everyone.
