Yara Shahidi channels natural hairstyles for Teen Vogue

Teen Vogue invited Black-ish star Yara Shahidi to show off the versatility of curly hair in five minimum effort hairstyles.

“Africa, this one is for you!”

Angolan supermodel Maria Borges made history at the Victoria’s Secret show, when instead of long and bouncy waves - the most common hairstyle for the underwear brand defilés, she wore her hair short and natural. “Being yourself is the right thing to do”, she said and internet exploded with praises.

”I told my agent I wanted to walk in the Victoria's Secret show with my natural hair," Borges, who cut her hair into a TWA (teeny-weeny Afro) for the Givenchy show earlier this year, told Essence. "I was nervous, but I had to do it. When they said 'yes' I didn't expect it, but I was so happy!"

Borges shared the moment on social media, posting on Instagram: “AFRICA, this one is for you! I LOVE YOU!”, hashtaging the image #MBmakinghistory, #afrohair, #bigwings, #vsfashionshow, #vsfs2015 and #AFRICA.

Though it wasn’t the first VSFS walk for this 23-year-old stunner, it was indeed the first to get so much attention from the media and her fans from all around the globe. And it is totally well deserved, because she didn’t just make a stand for all black models in the industry, but for the diversity in general. Natural hair coined as “beautiful” by the lingerie brand so often criticized for the “unnatural” beauty standards is something we need to be happening every day. Surely, there is nothing wrong with wearing weaves or extensions, but we love that Victoria’s Secret is finally making a step towards changing its unrealistic body and beauty image policies. (Just this year the brand came under fire twice: for featuring extremely thin models in the “Perfect Body” campaign and digitally downsizing the size-0-model’s tush!)

The 2015 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show will be broadcasted on CBS on December 8, but you can already take a sneak peek at the backstage of the show in Maria Borges’ and other angels’ Instagrams. Enjoy!
