In the run-up to the Oscars, coming-of-age drama Boyhood was the big winner at the Golden Globe Awards ceremony in Beverly Hills. Richard Linklater’s epic movie, which took 12 years to film, bagged the Best Drama /Best Director double as well as earning the Best Supporting Actress honors for Patricia Arquette.
David Fincher’s thriller-cum-black comedy Gone Girl and World War II biopic The Imitation Game failed to deliver the goods, despite multiple nominations. Civil rights drama Selma was also somewhat of a disappointment on the big night. But there is still more than one reason to see the inspiring movie.
Selma, after all, did receive four Golden Globe nods and, though losing out in the major categories, walked away with the Best Original Song prize. Glory added yet another accolade to John Legend’s trophy cabinet, after the nine-time Grammy winner collaborated with rapper Common to record this protest anthem.
Common made references to last year’s Ferguson unrest in his rap half of the song and, once again, spoke out for those fighting for their rights in his powerful acceptance speech at the gala.
“As I got to know the people of the Civil Rights movement, I realized, I am the hopeful black woman who was denied her right to vote. I am the caring white supporter killed on the front lines of freedom. I am the unarmed black kid who maybe needed a hand, but instead was given a bullet. I am the two fallen police officers murdered in the line of duty.”
With talk show host Oprah Winfrey starring and throwing her weight as one of the producers behind the project, Selma chronicles history-changing marches from Selma (hence the title) to Montgomery, a campaign led by Martin Luther King, Jr. The protests resulted in the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, rooting out racial discrimination in voting in U.S.
Selma’s Sundance-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay made more history after moving from the indies to major motion pictures. The 42-year-old became the first black woman to be nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the directing category. In stark contrast to the 12-year-long Boyhood, Selma took just over a month to shoot and also remains a force to be reckoned with in the Oscar race.
And last but definitely not least, Selma is well worth the attention of both critics and movie-goers thanks to its leading man David Oyelowo. The British actor of Nigerian decent came up with a career-best turn as MLK and was also nominated for a Golden Globe for the first time. It is a groundbreaking performance for the 38-year-old following a string of impressive supporting roles in DuVernay’s Middle of Nowhere, Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln and, most recently, The Butler. So it is a safe bet Oyelowo will at least make the cut when Oscar nominees are announced on Thursday.
